About me

I have been an English teacher since 1984 teaching adults and teenagers in a variety of schools and contexts. As well as teaching groups of General English and exam students, I have also taught 1-1 classes, and Business English. For 17 years I worked at International House in London as a teacher, trainer and manager.

I have been a CELTA trainer since 1987, working on CELTA courses every year for over 30 years in nine different centres in various countries. I was an assessor of CELTA courses for 25 years, and for ten years I was University of Cambridge Joint Chief Assessor with many responsibilities, including visiting centres worldwide to support trainers and to help maintain standards and ensure fair assessment of trainee teachers. I also helped new CELTA centres to set up courses for the first time and ran standardisation meetings for trainers and assessors from all over the world.

I have worked in academic management on and off for more than 25 years. At the age of 33 I was appointed Director of Teacher Training at a British Council school. Later, I was Director of Studies and Assistant Director of Studies at British Council schools. In addition, I tutored for several years on online Educational Management courses (certificate and diploma) for academic managers worldwide. I also designed, wrote and delivered face to face management courses for experienced and new academic managers.

I am the author of three books: ‘Teach EFL’, ‘Succeed in TEFL – Continuing Professional Development’, and ‘Get Ready for CELTA’, details of which are given on this website.

I am also a PQB qualified proofreader and proof editor, able to check any kind of document on Word, PDF or on paper, using the full range of BSI symbols if required. I am an Entry Level member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading.
