From Teacher to Manager

​

Do good teachers always make good managers? What are the extra challenges a new manager faces when they move from the staff room to the manager’s office? How do relationships change? What are the main problems and how might you overcome them? 

 

This course looks particularly at the transition from teacher to manager in the same school, but also going from being a teacher in one school, to a manager in another. We will examine a number of case studies as part of this course and discuss ‘top tips’ for academic managers.

Managing Lesson Observations

How can managers, working with teachers, make observations a more positive and developmental process than they sometimes are?

 

How can they be enjoyed by both observer and teacher?

 

What are the best tips for successful observations so they become more than ticking the box of the annual observation that must be done?

 

What variations can we add to the ‘traditional’ observation?

Course C3 

 

Mentoring of Staff

​

Mentoring in learning organisations is a valuable form of staff-driven support and development, and can be done formally and informally in a way that will benefit both the participants and the organisation as a whole. 

We will look at what a mentoring process involves, and what the qualities and roles are of both the mentor and the mentee, and also how goals and expectations can be managed.

We will discuss different types of mentoring, including onboarding, reverse, peer, group, distance, speed, career, and management mentoring, as well as mentoring circles and mentoring ambassadors.

Course C4

Professional Development of Staff

 

A key role of academic managers is to help staff develop professionally, whether it is a teacher with a year’s experience, or one with 30 years’ experience. What are some of the best ways to do this?

 

What is the SMART approach? What about teachers who are resistant to develop? Or those who don’t know how to? Let’s look at ideas together, and discuss the best ways to overcome some of these common challenges faced by both managers and teachers.

Course C5

 

Course Design

 

We will look at the different layers and approaches involved in planning a course. Areas covered will include school mission and philosophy, curriculum and syllabus design, selecting course books, needs analysis, lesson and course objectives, CEFR descriptors, can-do statements, schemes of work, assessment and review, and managing change. We will consider the guidance given in all these areas by EAQUALS, and what they look for when evaluating a school’s courses during inspections.

You will need to be able to use ZOOM for all online courses.  Face to face lessons are possible for students in London.
